Born in 1889, John Gilbert Winant is noted for his position as U.S. Ambassador to Britain, a post which he held from 1941 until he resigned in March 1946. A Republican politician, Winant originated from Concord, New Hampshire and was the first man to serve more than a single two-year term as Governor of New Hampshire, winning the election three times. In 1947, Winant committed suicide and was buried at St. Paul's School in his American home town of Concord.
