The Library was originally intended to be half funded by Scottish-American Millionaire philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and was opened on the 11th May 1903. However when Carnegie saw the building he was so impressed he decided to fund the entire project. The building is built in a Queen Anne style and legend has it the fragment of pillar at the front of the building came from King John’s Palace. The building is listed by English Heritage and is home to extensive collections of literature, music and local history.
