The Metropolitan Tabernacle is the home to a variety of social and religious organisations, including the Metropolitan Tabernacle Baptist Church and the Chinese Fellowship. It also houses the Tabernacle bookshop and a School of Theology. The original Tabernacle building was built in 1861, at the time of the Charles Spurgeon, who was a pastor at the Tabernacle for 38 years. The building has twice been damaged by fire and bombs, and now only the grand front of the original building remains. The rest of the building was rebuilt in the late 1950s.
