Perhaps the most famous gallery in the country, the National Gallery holds some of the most important works of art in the world. The collection of 2,300 paintings includes works by Monet, Cezanne and the famous ‘Sunflowers’ by Vincent Van Gogh. The building in Trafalgar Square was designed by William Wilkins and began in 1837, but many parts have been added over time. The most recent additions are the Sainsbury Wing, which was designed by Robert Venturi and completed in 1991, and the 2004 East Wing Project.
