Notting Hill, famous for the annual carnival which takes place each August, is probably equally well known for its street market in Portobello Road. Notting Hill Gate was a turnpike on the main road from London to Uxbridge. The gate was in place until the 19th Century. For shopping, Westbourne Grove is a fashionable area.
