The Old Vic Theatre was originally known as the Royal Coburg Theatre, and was designed by Rudolph Cabanel. The theatre was opened in 1818, but has been refurbished numerous times, most recently in 1983. The building’s Georgian exterior has gained it Grade 2 listed status. The famous Old Vic Shakespeare Company was founded in 1914 by Lilian Baylis, and has played host to some of the biggest names, including Thorndike, Gielgud and Olivier. In 2004, Kevin Spacey was appointed as the theatre’s technical director. He has commissioned a variety of performances, including Aladdin with Sir Ian McKellen as Widow Twanky.
