This magnificent monument is situated on the edge of the Thames half way along the riverside of Battersea Park, making it visible to people for miles in either direction along the Chelsea embankment. Built in 1985 by the Buddhist Nipponzan Myohoji order the monument was the first pagoda to be built in any western capital, and remains the only dedicated monument to peace in Europe. According to its designers, its purpose is to create a focus for all races and creeds in a search for peace. The monument is a popular spot for peace rallies.
