Steer was one of the leaders in art of his generation. He looked to the French for influence in his work and therefore always had a tinge of Franco-style in his work throughout his career, despite living at the heart of London. In the early 20th Century he spent a great deal of time playing with light in his works, breaking boundaries with his unusual use of colours and shapes in his work. Steer lived a great deal of his life in this house and many of his paintings are exhibited in London galleries.
