There have been illuminations in Piccadily Circus since the early 1900s, in fact at one stage most of the buildings in the area carried some sort of advertising motif. However most of these have been removed leaving only one section on the north west corner of the circus. It is officially unnamed but is unofficially known as Monico after the Cafe Monico which used to stand below the lights. The advertising hoardings are not only some of the most expensive in London but certainly the best known.
