The current theatre is the second on the site; with the original CJ Phipps designed building being demolished in 1937. The new theatre was designed by Robert Cromie and was opened later the same year. The theatre is renowned for its large Stalls bar, which has a dance floor that was built for tea dances. Restoration work on the theatre was carried out in 2004, which included slightly increasing the capacity of the venue to 1,160. Noteworthy productions that have been staged include Aspects of Love, Copacabana and Mamma Mia!
