The first Putney Bridge was begun after an act of parliament decreed there should be a river crossing between Putney and Fulham in 1726. Since the early wooden crossing there have been several bridges on this site. The latest crossing was constructed in 1876 to the designs of the legendary architect Sir Joseph Bazalgette.
