Pre-industrialisation, Rainham Beach was a tourist destination, being frequented by East London day-trippers. One of Rainham’s landmarks is the Norman St. Helen and St. Giles Church with its original round-headed arches, constructed between 1160 and 1170. The War Memorial, a large clock tower, is situated on Broadway. Unveiled in 1921, it commemorates those lost in World War I.
