Henry VII gave Richmond its name in 1501 when he built a palace there named after Castle Richmond in the north. Maids of Honour Row, built in 1724, was used as a location by Charles Dickens. In 1730 the green was the venue for the first inter-county cricket match between Surrey and Middlesex.
