There is little question when one asks about the ‘heroic age’ of Antarctic exploration whose name you will hear first. Robert Falcon Scott narrowly missed out on being the first man to reach the Antarctic, beaten by Roald Amundsen. It was to be Scott’s last expedition in 1912 as he and his team all perished on the Ross Ice Shelf. The legend of Scott of the Antarctic has been the theme of many movies and books and the intrigue surrounding his life and death continues. He planned many of his expeditions from his Chelsea home.
