Robert Fortune used this house more as a base for his work than as a home during his busy working days. As one of the most well respected travellers and botanists in the world, Fortune spent a great deal of his life on the road, living out of suitcases, collecting samples and researching plant life. He was responsible for some of the most significant recording of plant life across the world during his lifetime.
