Sir Maurice Fitzmaurice designed this road tunnel which connects the Limehouse area of Docklands with the village of Rotherhithe in the London Borough of Southwark. The tunnel was opened in 1908 and was hailed as a great piece of engineering success by the design community of the time. Above the entrance to the tunnel are the original blades used by the machinery that dug the tunnel. The facility is a well known traffic route in the capital and one of the few crossing points of the Thames east of Tower Bridge.
