The current Royal Opera House is the third such building on the site, and is the home of the Royal Opera and the Royal Ballet. The original Royal Opera House, known as the Theatre Royal, was completed in 1732. This building was destroyed by fire, as was the second building that was built in 1808. The current theatre began life in 1856, and was designed by Edward Middleton Barry. However, this building eventually fell into disrepair and a £220 million refurbishment was completed in 2000.
