The American painter and inventor of Morse Code lived in this house in central London between 1812 and 1815. Although Morse is best known for his invention of the electric telegraph and the subsequent system of dots and dashes that are still use today, he was in fact better known for much of his lifetime as a fine portrait painter. He spent four years in London in the earlier part of his life, painting nobles and city gentlemen. Morse enjoyed local patronage and was regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art in central London.
