The original Savoy theatre was opened in 1881. Designed by CJ Phipps, it was noted for being the first building in the world to be solely lit by electricity. The current theatre that was designed by Frank Tugwell opened in 1929, and is art deco in style. The theatre had to be extensively restored in the early 1990’s due fire damage. After re-opening in 1993, the 1,150 seat theatre has gone back to staging the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas it is most famous for, including the D’Oyly Carte productions of The Mikado and The Pirates of Penzance.
