The statue in the centre of Leicester Square shows the famous playwright William Shakespeare. Shakespeare is surrounded by dolphins, which are rumoured to be a symbol of knowledge and wisdom. The statue is made of stone, and contains an inscription from the Shakespeare play Twelfth Night that reads ‘There is no darkness but ignorance’. The statue’s plinth also contains a message about the purchase of Leicester Fields, which was bought by Albert Crant and turned into Leicester Square, making the area public for everybody.
