Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre was rebuilt under the guidance of Sam Wanamaker, and is a fairly accurate reproduction of the original Globe Theatre which was built in Elizabethan times nearby. The original Globe Theatre was burnt to the ground in 1613 during a performance of Henry VIII, when a cannon was discharged and set fire to the theatre’s thatched roof. Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the theatre, which is open-air, in May 1997 with a performance of Henry V.
