Also known as the Upstream Building, the Shell Tower caused a lot of arguments when it was originally planned in the 1950s. It was believed the building would be refused planning permission, and the plan was for a building nearly twice as high as the one that was finally built. However, the 351-foot building was completed in 1961, and was based upon the Rockerfeller Centre in New York. Designed by Sir Howard Robertson, the building is still the corporate headquarters of Shell.
