Henry Newbolt was born in Staffordshire in 1862 and after being educated at Oxford University moved to London to begin a career as a lawyer and barrister. Although a good lawman he found his calling with the pen, becoming one of the 19th Century's best regarded playwrights, writers and poets. It was for his poetry that he gained most acclaim, breaking boundaries challenging the standard definitions of virtue.
