This small monument marks the site of the infamous Millbank Prison that stood looming on the banks of the River Thames until it was decommissioned and knocked down in 1867. The prison gained such notoriety because it was the point from which the prisoners were put onto hulks and sent to Australia. For many this section of land close to where Vauxhall Bridge now stands would have been there last on English soil.
