The Southwark Playhouse is one of the more recent theatres to open in London, having been founded in 1993. The building itself is a converted Victorian coffee and tea warehouse. The theatre has rapidly established itself as a leading studio theatre, and shows both modern and classic plays. The theatre was opened to generate more investment and revenue into the deprived Southwark area, and also to help new and innovative actors and directors gain exposure for their work.
