St Alfege was a former Archbishop of Canterbury, martyred after he was captured by Vikings and refused to pay ransom. This is the site where he was supposedly slain, and there has been a church located here since the 11th century. Nicholas Hawksmoor, a student of Sir Christopher Wren, designed the current building in 1714. It is an imposing Georgian structure featuring murals and lovely stained glass windows.
