This strangely named church is so called because it was once overshadowed by the Cornhill Maypole. The church dates back to around, 1530, with the Maypole being destroyed some twenty years later. Located in St Mary Axe, the area was once the home of Hans Holbein, who lived in the parish before dying of plague in 1543. A monument to Holbein is located in the church, as well as a memorial to the first chronicler of London, John Stow.
