Until the turn of the twentieth century, Balham served the Catholics of Tooting. In 1906 work began on the fine church at St. Boniface on the main road to Mitcham in Tooting and was completed a year later. The building was designed by prominent architect Benedict Williamson and was seen as a great addition to the community. The church is a fine example of architecture of the earl twentieth century and is home to lively Catholic community in the inner city.
