St Etheldreda’s Church is located in Ely Place, and it is the oldest Roman Catholic church in London. The church was built in 1251, and still maintains many of the traditions of the diocese of the city of Ely, when bishops had Episcopal houses. The church is still located within a private road, and is looked after by six elected commissioners. The church has a proud musical tradition, and the Sunday Mass is often sung in Latin. The church is also famously mentioned by Shakespeare in both Richard II and Richard III.
