St George the Martyr is one of the oldest parishes in the area, having been founded as far back as the 12th Century. It is probably the first church in London to be named after St George. The current church is Georgian in design, and was completed in 1736 by John Price. However, one of the most striking features of the church is its Italianate ceiling, which was designed by Basil Champneys in 1897. The church also underwent major restoration in the 1950’s after it was damaged during the Second World War.
