The original Cathedral on the site was completed in 1848, and was designed by A.W.N Pugin. However, it was not until two years later, when the English Hierarchy was restored, that St George’s was known as a cathedral. Until Westminster Cathedral opened some fifty years later, St George’s was the centre of Catholic worship in London. The original building was destroyed during Blitz, but a new Cathedral was designed by Romilly Bernard Craze and opened in 1958. The Late Pope John Paul II visited the church in 1982.
