It was originally planned as the centre of a grand Regency townscape, but all that now remains of St George’s Circus is the stone obelisk in the middle of roundabout. The obelisk is made of Portland Stone, and was built in 1771. The monument was moved from its home in 1905, and placed near the Imperial War Museum. However, the pillar was replaced in the late 1990’s. It was built to honour Brass Crosby, who was the Lord Mayor of London.
