The church of St Helen at Bishopsgate has had a complicated history, which dates back to the 13th Century when a nunnery was built on the site. The church was originally made up of two medieval churches joined together. The church suffered the misfortune of being badly damaged twice within the space of a year, when two IRA bombs went off nearby in 1992 and 1993. The church has since been rebuilt and modernised. St Helen’s is also noted for its large collection of interior tombs and memorials, including that of Thomas Gresham.
