Another one of the oddly named churches in the City, the name Garlickhythe is derived from the ‘hythe’ or ‘jetty’ where garlic was brought in when the church was on the bank of the Thames. There has been a church on the site perhaps as far back as the late 11th Century, although Sir Christopher Wren completed the current church in 1682. The building has undergone many restorations over the years, including a period in the 1950’s when the timbers were found to be infested with death-watch beetle, and the church was closed for ten years.
