St John’s Gate and Museum gives the history of the order of St John, and the gate shows the monastic past of the area. The gate was built in 1504 by the prior Thomas Docwra, as an entrance to the inner precinct of the priory of the Knights of St John. The gate has undergone extensive rebuilding over the years, and much of the gate dates back only as far as the 19th century. The building has been used for many purposes, including a printing house, the home of Hogarth in the early 1700s, and a tavern.
