The Church of St Mary Aldermary has existed in some form on the site for over 900 years. The name ‘Aldermary’ is usually thought to mean that it is the oldest of the churches of St Mary in the area. The church was rebuilt after the Great Fire, and was completed in 1682. St Mary Aldermary is the only Wren church built in the Gothic style to have survived in the City area. The church has held the remains of a number of famous people, including a vintner named Richard, who was the brother of Geoffrey Chaucer.
