The church of St Mary at Hill is near Billingsgate, and is often known as the fishermen’s church. The church, like so many in the City, was built by Wren, although the tower is of a later design, being finished in 1780. The Wren church was built upon the site of a previous church, which was originally completed sometime in the 12th Century. The church was closed in the 19th Century for a number of years, and over 3,000 bodies were found whilst the church was being restored. It is also rumoured that Thomas Becket was a parson at the St Mary’s.
