This is another City church associated with Wren, but the main tower of it was designed by one of his pupils, Nicholas Hawksmoor. The rest of the church is by Wren, and it is often referred to as his ‘last work’. The church is highly Gothic in style, and is noted for one famous literary connection. The author of Elegy in a Country Churchyard, Thomas Gray, was baptised here and was born very close to the church in the early 1700s. The church still has a walking stick owned by Gray.
