Despite its name, St Michael’s does not have any connections with royalty. The ‘Royal’ title comes from the fact that wine merchants in the area used to buy a lot of wine from the vineyards of La Réole in France. The current church was one of the latest churches built by Wren, and was completed in 1717. The pervious church was home to the remains of the famous Mayor of London, Richard ‘Dick’ Whittington. There is a stained glass window of Whittington in the current church, which depicts him with his cat.
