St Pancras Church was built in 1819-22 to serve a long-established parish. An example of the Greek Revival style, its most distinctive feature are the four caryatids (draped female figures) seen here, which were based on those of the Erechtheum temple in Athens. The figures were originally made taller in error, and had to have a middle section removed so they could fit under the roof. They guard the entrance to the crypt, which was closed as a burial vault in 1854 and later used as an air-raid shelter in both World Wars.
