St Patrick’s in Soho Square is one of the main Catholic churches in the West End. John Kelly designed the building and it opened on St Patrick’s Day in 1893. It replaced the chapel that was on the site, which was demolished three years earlier. The church is Italianate in design, and was lucky to survive the Second World War when a bomb fell through the room but did no explode. The church also runs a school in the nearby Great Chapel Street, which opened in 1888, and replaced the original school, which dated back to 1803.
