This church is named after a rarely known saint, St Vedast. The ‘alias’ is the English version of his name. St Vedast was a 5th Century Bishop of Arras, and was known for converting Clovis. The current church was built by Wren, but was known as the cheapest church he built because the walls were still in partly in place and could be re-used. The church was restored after the War, and is now the official church of the Actors’ Church Union. In keeping with this association, the interior of the church is very brightly decorated in gold, silver, black, and white.
