Baron Portal of Hungerford was a relatively new peerage to be created at the end of the Second World War in 1945 in commemoration of Charles Portal, commander in chief of the Royal Air Force throughout the war. Usually recognised as the greatest ever military aviation warfare tactician, Portal was credited with masterminding the downfall of the German air force at the Battle of Britain. His fine statue stands in the shadow of Westminster.
