The statue of General Napier is made of bronze, and was placed in Trafalgar Square in 1856. General Napier was a career army officer, and spent most of his time abroad, until he returned to fight in the North of England in the 1830s. He would probably have remained unknown had it not been for his return to India in 1841, where he famously defeated an army of 22,000 in Sind with a force of only 2,800. Sind, which is now Pakistan, was conquered and Napier was hailed a hero.
