The 1st Duke of Cambridge rose to that title in 1850. A man born into tremendous wealth and privileged, George of Cambridge was determined to stand out for more than just a title. He therefore became a military man and insisted on being actively involved with his troops. His determination and developed skill led him to become commander in chief of the British Army for the last two decades of the 19th Century.
