Joseph Plaxton, later to be knighted for his work, was the mastermind and designer behind the great Crystal Palace that stood for over eighty years in south London. A mastermind of Victorian design, Plaxton won plaudits around the world after his design was constructed and served to form the centrepiece of Britain's Great Exhibition in 1851. The building was unfortunately destroyed by fire in 1936.
