Hugh Trenchard was the founder of the Royal Air Force in 1918. A brave airman during the First World War, Trenchard quite rightly believed that the airborne division of the army was getting too big and served a completely different role in conflict to the ground troops or navy. The RAF was founded and became the first independent air force of any military organisation in the world. It has gone on to establish a proud history as a fine well disciplined institution.
