In the late 19th Century, many of the current green areas of South London were nothing but wasteland. In order to protect these areas and put them to a better use, the Metropolitan Board of Works obtained several of these areas, Streatham Common included. They planned to create an idyllic country environment for the people of the inner city. They planted trees, dug lakes and cultured gardens. Today, Streatham Common is still an oasis of calm and relaxation amongst the busy streets of the Capital. The common is a popular spot for all forms of sporting and social recreation, as well as playing host to some major summer events such as rock concerts and the world famous Streatham Kite Festival.
