The former water gardens of the Casina Villa are now a city park. The Villa was built by John Nash in 1796 for the lawyer, Richard Shaw, who made his fortune from the long trial of Warren Hastings, the Governor-General of India. After World War I, the Villa’s grounds were used for Lloyd George’s “Homes Fit for Heroes”, but the water gardens were converted into a park. It is a rare survival of the work of the pioneering landscape designer, Humphrey Repton, and includes a pond, winding wooded paths and flowerbeds.
