Built in 1892 by sugar magnate, philanthropist and great friend of Brixton, the Tate Library is Brixton’s main public library. The beautiful building houses a fine collection of literature, film and music. Tate’s widow donated the large open area outside the library as a public area. Known as ‘Tate’s Garden’ it is in fact largely concrete, but is home to an impressive statue of Sir Henry Tate.
